fences - zoning permit form
Any construction of fences in a Historic District requires an approved Zoning Permit from the ACLUD Board of Trustees, with an initial permit review for historic district properties performed by the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC). Any work may not begin until a Zoning Permit is issued.
PERMIT PROCESS:
To obtain a permit, you must submit an application, complete with scale drawings of the proposed project and the required fee.
Residential: Amana-style post and board fences and picket fences are permitted.
Post and board fences may have 3 or 4 rail boards across, 6 inches wide, and square or round posts 42 inches high, 4 inch square or 5 inch in diameter, with distance between posts of 6 to 8 feet.
Picket fences must be of 2-3 inch wide wood slats with a gap between slats to be 50% of the width of the slats, and 42 inches high.
Commercial: Properties may either have a post and board or a post and chain fence.
Post and board fences may have 3 or 4 rail boards across, 6 inches wide, and square or round posts 42 inches high, 4 inch square or 5 inch diameter, distance between posts 6 to 8 feet.
A post and chain fence must have the square or round wood posts 42 inches high, 4 inch square or 5 inch diameter, distance between posts 6 to 8 feet and be connected by a single chain of galvanized or black metal fencing in 1 or 2 inch links.
Other types of historic fences besides post and board and picket fences may be allowed if a property owner can show by evidence that a different historical fence existed on that property. Please contact the ACLUD Administrator for further information, including information about Swimming Pool Fences.
Once the permit activity has been completed, the applicant must contact the Administrator for a final inspection and the issuance of a Certificate of Compliance. The Certificate of Compliance ensures that the approved terms of the Zoning Permit have been met. The permit process is not complete and the subject land or structure cannot be used until the Certificate of Compliance has been issued.
Refer to the Fence Information document (see below) and the Land use Plan Ordinances for additional information.
